We did consider delaying the review as a result, but even at this stage it’s clear that the multiplayer is Ascension’s real highlight. But it’s fairly obvious that the campaign was not the only priority here, as this is the first God Of War game to have a multiplayer mode.ĭespite the review embargo being up today though the status of the servers means that we’ve only had a short time to try out the multiplayer. That’s not a particularly original concept for video games though and having to decay objects to get them out of the way, or creating duplicates of yourself, are neither original nor especially interesting in their own right.ĭespite the issues, many of which have been with the franchise since its inception, we still enjoyed the story campaign – and probably more so than God Of War III at least. But it’s as uneven as ever, especially in terms of difficultly level.Īs always the platforming is fairly rudimentary but the puzzle sections do have a few new elements, mostly revolving around the control of time. The story campaign is a little shorter than usual, at around 10 hours, but we would’ve been fine with that if it had sorted out the series’ long-standing pacing problems. There’s more deboweling, eye gouging, and decapitation here than a dozen torture porn movies and although it’s ridiculous enough that you never really take it seriously it’s still fairly disgusting, and we’ve always felt unnecessary to the game’s appeal. Or at least it seems that way until you start eviscerating the enemies in the series’ customarily over-the-top fashion. It almost is, but the creatures in particular look as if they’ve just stepped out of a Ray Harryhausen movie, and appear not so much as flesh and blood but as wire and clay. It’s not just the detail but the distinctive lighting and texture work that creates a look that is purposefully not photorealistic. It does help that Ascension looks fantastic though, with considerably improved graphics over the already excellent third game. Kratos can often end up fighting enemies that are essentially off-screen and he himself is often reduced to a tiny matchstick figure or even entirely obscured by the backdrop.Īnd while God Of War can claim to have popularised the quick time event in modern gaming it makes no attempt to atone for that crime, and if anything there’s more reliance on them than ever. It’s not perfect though and not only is it disappointing to find the game retains the same fixed camera system of old but it’s also handled with less care than usual. Throw in an array of magic attacks, and more emphasis on dodging via the right analogue stick, and you’ve got what is easily the best combat experience of the series. Rage mode is now activated automatically when the appropriate meter is filled, while a Scorpion-from-Mortal-Kombat style grapple attack allows you to snag enemies and throw them at their allies or over the edge of a cliff. Kratos can also disarm enemies and steal their weapons, including in mid-combo. Although the default weapons are the traditional Blades of Chaos these can now be imbued with different elemental powers, such as fire and ice. But while the foundations are the same all the elements have seen at least some small improvement, most significantly the combat. ![]()
